One of the most essential aspects of finding any job is having a well written and polished resume. This is of course true for jobs related to process improvement. With the knowledge that you have from helping organizations and companies with improving their processes you should be able to implement a similar approach to improve your resume.

The process used for resume writing often includes a draft that you’ve created for your previous job. While this may be a good starting point other times you may want to consider starting from scratch as your experiences, insight, and knowledge of your industry have changed since your last job. Starting the proces from the beginning can be difficult but also ensure that previous problems in your resume are not inherited.

After creating a new resume draft you’ll want to ensure that you’ve followed correct spelling and grammar guidelines. To do this I suggest utilizing a tool that offers grammar check services. These tools are a great starting point to ensure that you haven’t missed something that will stand out as an error to a hiring manager. It is well known that grammar or spelling errors could cost you an opportunity to interview and impress those that could be your future co-workers.

Once you are comfortable with the state of your resume the next step in the process should be having a peer review the work. They can help identify problems or confusing aspects of your resume and help you work through them. Additionally, this is a perfect opportunity to have them drill you on the questions your resume invites interviewers to ask.

Many people ask questions from an interview based on the specifics of your resume. If you know it well enough you can anticipate the questions they’ll ask and have clear and structured answers for them. Your ability to deliver information will increase and you’ll become more likely to impress them with your knowledge.

Don’t be afraid to restructure the process you use for your resume preparation when looking for process improvement jobs. Following these steps will get you that much closer to your next oppoortunity.

This is an email, republished with permission, from a reader of our website.

In my job search I have been through a lot of sites trying to make sure I don’t miss any of the latest job openings. I’ve hit the big players (Monster, CareerBuilder) and the social sites (LinkedIn, Twitter) and I’ve even run into some scam sites along the way (I won’t mention who, but you know who you are). Recently though, I found a cool site – www.jobfox.com – that had a very different approach that I really like. Instead of me doing the work of searching all of the postings to try and find the ones where I think I have a shot, this site uses my employment history (i.e. past jobs/skills) to match me to all open opportunities in their system. It is like having a niche site, but one tailored just for me. When I login, I see jobs that require BPM and workflow knowledge (both of which I have a lot of experience with) from some cool companies in DC. And while I have tried some of the niche sites in my field, I just don’t feel like they have enough jobs (and they don’t seem to have new jobs often enough). The email alerts I have received from Jobfox so far have been good and fairly frequent.

So, from my end, I like the way the Jobfox system works. I haven’t tried their premium version yet (called “Break Through”) so I can’t say much about that. I am still debating using their resume services to have my resume re-written (it does need to be reworked). And while I did have to fill out a lot of details about my work history to get the system up and running, it now feels like time well spent (and so far I haven’t had to do any additional work). As they say, your mileage may vary. Good luck!

P.S. – Interesting update, I did some Google searches and noticed some folks saying that Jobfox is actually a scam site. I’m not sure where that comes from; all I can say is from my experience, it seems to be a helpful and solid site (and, the one time I contacted customer support, I received a response within a day or so and the person was very helpful). Go figure – but Jobfox scam it is not.

Using Software to Manage Processes

Gone are the days of managing processes with large stacks of paper and slow communication from employees performing the various areas of a process. Process software has become an essential part of all organizations.

Many shipping and packing companies have significantly reduced costs by implementing software that assists them with managing their processes. But, this approach is not limited to only those type of companies. Organizations of all sizes are utilizing process software to help them manage efforts to increase productivity and reduce costs. The reason for such focus in software for process management is that it is an internal and quick way to increase profit margins and increase product output by an organization without having to relay on outside factors.

Open Source Options

While the market for available commercial off the shelf (COTS) products for process improvement and management continually increases, there are also open source options to help companies improve their processes. Open Source Process Software is a low cost option for organizations that want to see how process improvement efforts can be managed through software but don’t want to, or don’t have large enough budgets, to jump into closed source solutions.

Open source software continually becomes a viable option for individuals and corporations looking to get more down at lower costs. Check out the entire site and available links to see how process improvement and management efforts can be increased through software focused toward these particular tasks.

Closed Source Solutions

If your organization is mature or has a steady budget, purchasing a COTS product to assist with processes is a reasonable and important investment. Process software options that are developed for commercial sale are often very successful at helping organizations with their process related initiatives.

Many large organizations and governments utilize process software to move steps in a process to a digital approach. This allows them to quickly analyze and make sure that no product moving through a process is lost. Process software creates modeling options for individuals to see how changing steps in a process can have a quick and immediate impact on the bottom line for an organization.

Jobs with Process Software

Even more so that process improvement jobs and process management jobs, jobs around process software are readily available to individuals with this skill set. If you can develop or assist with the development of process automation through this type of software, it will not take long or be difficult to find a job.

Developers with proficiency in other coding languages can easily pick up the skills needed for process software jobs.
